Actions, Likes, and Footprints Explained
"Friend," "Partner," and "Other" actions, likes you can send as often as you want, and footprints that record profile views. Here's what each one means and when to use it.
aim gives you two ways to show interest in someone, plus one feature that records when you've viewed a profile.
| Actions | Likes | Footprints | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Meaning | Shows what you're looking for: "Friend," "Partner," or "Other" | Casual interest | A record that you viewed a profile |
| How many times | Once per type | As often as you want | The count goes up each time you open the profile |
| Notifies the other person | Only when you both send one | Every time you send one | Never |
| Where to see them | Menu > "Action" | Menu > "Like" | Menu > "Footprint" |
Actions: show what you're looking for
The three buttons at the bottom of someone's profile are "Actions."
- Friend (person icon)
- Partner (heart icon)
- Other (lightning bolt icon)
The key point: if only one of you sends an action, the other person isn't told. Only when you both send the same type of action do you each get a notification saying "Action matched!" So you can say what you're looking for without the awkwardness of being turned down.
The button color shows the status:
- Navy: not sent yet
- Orange: you sent it (they haven't yet)
- Red: you both sent it and it's a match
You can send each type of action to the same person only once, and in general it can't be undone. Please double-check before tapping. (On the Standard plan, you can undo up to 2 times a month.)
You can see your matches by type in the tabs under "Action" in the menu. You can also filter your message list with the "Active actions" and "Mutual" tabs.
Likes: a casual way to show interest
The red flame button at the bottom right of a profile is "Like."
- There's no limit. Send as many as you like.
- The other person is notified every time you send one. Unlike actions, they'll know even if it's one-sided.
- You can see likes you've sent and received in the "From others" and "From you" tabs under "Like" in the menu.
We recommend using a like when you just want them to know you exist, and an action when you want to see whether you're looking for the same thing.
Footprints: a record of profile views
When you open someone's profile, you leave a "footprint."
- Viewing the same person multiple times counts as one entry, with the number shown (for example, "3 visits").
- The other person does not get a push notification when you leave a footprint.
- You can see them in the "Visited" and "Visited by" tabs under "Footprint" in the menu. How far back you can see depends on your plan.
No footprint is left when:
- You have 0 public photos
- You've blocked the other person or they've blocked you
- You've turned on "Stealth mode" on the Standard plan (in Settings)
On the Light plan or higher, you can delete footprints you've left by swiping left.
